Bartleby, the Scrivener
This work of Pansori is based on the novel Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street by American writer Herman Melville. Bartleby, who works in a law office as a scrivener, embarrasses the lawyer by saying “I would prefer not to." To the dismay of the lawyer and to the irritation of the other employees, Bartleby performs fewer and fewer tasks, and eventually none. Heebie Jeebie Juice sings this Pansori that has lyrics created from the story of the novel. The performer raises a question, describing the lawyer’s memory about Bartleby, and suggests they the audience help search for Bartleby's secret. Unique stage sets and props call the attention of an audience to the Bartleby’s problem
